Wings Drop OT vs Timberwolves

Will Allen’s second goal of the game and 10th of the season proved to be the overtime winner as the Miramichi Timberwolves edged the Fredericton Riverview Ford Red Wings 3-2 in Maritime Hockey League action Sunday afternoon at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

It was Allen’s third game-winning goal of the season in just his ninth game for the 10-2 Timberwolves. He struck at 3:22 of extra time past goaltender Mavric Welk in the Fredericton net. Welk was named the game’s third star, making 35 saves on the day, but remains winless in four starts in the Fredericton net. It was Miramichi goaltender Jack Flanagan, who stopped 39 Fredericton shots, who was named the game’s first star.

Manix Sarassin of the Wings, with his ninth goal of the season, opened the scoring for Fredericton 5:10 into the hockey game, but Liam Travers of the T-Wolves answered with his second of the year at 6:38 as the teams ended the first period in a 1-1 tie.

Allen’s shorthanded goal at 15:30 of the second period was the only goal of the middle stanza. The Wings forced overtime when defenceman Jake Tracey scored his second of the season at 17:33.

The Wings picked up a point in the standings with the OT loss to improve to 4-5-2-1 for 11 points, tied with the Campbellton Tigers for the cellar.. The loss was the fifth in six games for the Wings, who will seek to get back on track when they host the Tigers Thursday night at 7 p.m. at the Grant-Harvey Centre.
