The Fredericton Red Wings are excited to announce the acquisition of 20-Year-old Forward Evan Benwell of Toronto, Ontario. Evan’s first Visit to the Maritime Provinces, is a return to his roots, where Fredericton was once home for his family. Although, he never met him, it is hard not to miss the building named his great grandfather, The Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton stands strong carrying the name and serving our community for now close to 50 years.
The Red Wings acquired Evan Benwell from the Whitby Fury of the OJHL, for future considerations. Evan has a strong hockey pedigree, a first-round pick of the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL. Evan last played in the BCHL for the Merritt Centennials scoring 9 goals and 9 assists in 28 games in 2019. Evan led his Midget Team all the way to the Telus Cup in 2017 in Prince George BC, the Mississauga Rebels, losing out eventually to the Cape Breton West Islanders who went on to win the National Midget Title that year. Evan has 70 Pts in 75 Games.
Head Coach Brian Casey says “ we are very fortunate to add a player like Evan at this point in the season, he has a proven Jr Hockey background and will bring much needed offence to our team, as a 20 year old player, his leadership and experience will make a big difference with our group and look forward to having him in our line up, he is completing his quarantine presently, and will be finished very soon”
President Governor Roger Shannon says “ When speaking with Evan on the phone, when he mentioned his roots, and the story, it seemed right at that moment, this kid needs to come to Fredericton, and finish his Jr Career here, it was meant to be”
