The Fredericton Junior Red Wings have selected the individual that will lead the Hockey Program for the upcoming Season. Head Coach Brian Casey was welcomed to the Fredericton Red Wings organization during an announcement in Fredericton New Brunswick on Friday, May 31st. Coach Casey has been involved with hockey since the age of 5, most recently the coach of the Kings Edgehill, one of the top Hockey Prep Schools in Canada, located in Windsor, Nova Scotia.
As an Athlete, Coach Casey played two years of Major Junior Hockey in the QMJHL then 4 years with the Acadia Axemen University squad. He then went on to play one year with The Canadian Men’s National Team (where he won a Spengler Cup in Davos Switzerland with Team Canada in 1999) and ten years of pro hockey in Slovakia, Austria and Denmark. His coaching career has included time with his Home Town of Grand Falls – Windsor Cataracts (winner of Herder Cup for Mens Senior Hockey), two years with Kings Edgehill, two years as assistant coach with STFX X-MEN and Head Coach with Hockey Newfoundland at the Gatorade Challenge Cup.
Coach Casey describes his coaching style as “A Very Passionate Coach who communicates very well with my Players” which helps him build a healthy culture within the team and organization. “I believe in a team first attitude and for our players to act very professionally on and off the ice” says Casey. His goal at the start will be to build a team that competes extremely hard during every practice and game. Earning an identity centered around the teams work ethic will ensure they have the confidence to win at home or on the road. If this is established early, “success in regular season and playoffs will always follow this attitude”.
His first tasks with the Red Wings will be to build relationships with the existing staff and members of the FJRW and assess that players that are transferring from St. Stephen in preparation for the MHL Draft on June 15th in Edmundston. Coach Casey is a Sydney Crosby Fan, as well as a fan of the Boston Bruins (making a run to win their 7th Stanley Cup) and loves watching PGA Golf and the NFL is his downtime. Coach Casey is most looking forward to building a relationship with the Fredericton, Oromocto and other surrounding communities and to begin planning for a busy Kick-Off Season for the Rebirth of a Fredericton Hockey Tradition with the Fredericton Junior Red Wings Hockey Program.
